Robis Consulting was started by Rob Johnson in 1999 after more than 20 years working in senior underwriting and management positions at several Insurance and Reinsurance companies in Australia. As a qualified Actuary in both the UK and Australia he felt he could bring a valuable blend of underwriting experience and analytical expertise to a broader range of clients. Upon founding Robis Consulting, Rob added Financial Accountant qualifications to his skillset, cementing a keen awareness of the fundamental profit drivers for Insurance and Reinsurance portfolios and of the ultimate linkage between underwriting performance and capital providers. Drawing on these complementary areas, Rob was perfectly positioned to offer clients advice on all aspects of the financial and underwriting control of their portfolios.
For over 20 years now, Rob has been helping clients to effect optimal and practical portfolio management solutions. In a reinsurance broking capacity, Rob has consulted on some ground-breaking reinsurance transactions including structuring, pricing and placing Insurance Linked Securities for over a decade. Covers have been across all lines of business; encompassing global exposures and placed into major markets including London, New York, Bermuda and Zurich.
In the world of analytics, Rob has been involved in projects to design and review reinsurance strategies with multiple financial objectives; assess catastrophe model outputs; analyse capital models and their interaction with APRA/Solvencey II/IFRS17; advise on optimising reinsurance efficiencies.
An invaluable development in the evolution of Robis Consulting has been the opportunity to work with Beach and Associates, a high-powered boutique reinsurance broker with businesses in London, New York, Zurich, Bermuda and Toronto. It was here that he was affectionaely bestowed the title of “Chief Sorcerer” by his colleagues for his ability to analyse complex and ambiguous portfolio dynamics, demanding buyer requirements and the needs of sophisticated and experienced reinsureres to deliver reinsurance solutions which were practical, effective and placeable. Rob enjoyed the opportunity at this time to coach and support young actuaries developing their careers and a curiosity and passion for Insurance and Reinsurance analytics.
The wonderful world of reinsurance has seen Robis Consulting travel far and wide – from Lloyds of London and other major insurance and reinsurance centres in Europe and North America, to the Middle East, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Mexico and elsewhere.
However, Rob doesn’t just consult on complex reinsurance placements and reviews. From humble beginnings in general insurance house and motor portfolios, Rob has lots of experienced undertaking a range of pricing and underwriting reviews for Personal Lines and SME products. Providing meaningful and practical solutions for smaller niche operators, is equally rewarding.
Rob has recently been engaged to work on a project with the Institute of Actuaries, furthering his contribution to the education of tomorrow’s actuaries.

Rob has presented to many CEO’s, CFO’s, CRO’s and Chief Actuaries over the years but is consistently recognised for his ability to engage meaningfully with all levels within an organisation and all technical levels to achieve outcomes. Having worked on a number of confidential projects over the years, Rob is used to operating under the radar and is valued for being discreet and professional.
Rob’s style is practical and efficient. Whilst he applies a rigorous and robust focus to analysis, he aims to provide practical solutions without the distraction of unnecessarily sophisticated theories.
Rob has been lucky enough to travel a lot throughout his career, including living in London for a few years, as well as Canada. Wherever he goes, he always seeks out a good coffee shop. Oftentimes the best brewers turn out to be Australian expats with their gregarious and relaxed natures. Rob brings this Australian style to his consulting approach and has a remarkable ability to make insurance and reinsurance interesting, if not always so!
